Please join us for a talk and discussion on resiliency in urban food, energy, and water systems. The National Science Foundation has established a funding program in Innovations in Food Energy and Water Systems. This workshop is meant to bring researchers together to network and identify potential working relationships. The talk by Dr. Joshua Newell, Assistant Professor, University of Michigan, School of Natural Resource and Environment is titled “Will Scaling-up Urban Agriculture Mitigate or Exacerbate Food-Energy-Water Impacts?
Talk Abstract: We are experiencing an agricultural renaissance in city-regions across the U.S. and studies indicate that virtually all of our food could hypothetically be grown on land within 100 miles of the city center. Despite widespread public acceptance that this would be a desirable and sustainable transformation, some research suggests that this “scaling-up” of agriculture could actually exacerbate impacts on food-energy-water (FEW) systems due to greater water and energy use and negative impacts on air and water quality. In this presentation, Newell will discuss the potential synergies and trade-offs associated with scaling-up agriculture in and around cities.
The talk will be followed by Rutgers Panelists commentaries on Urban FEWs Resilience Qizhong (George) Guo (Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering), Clint Andrews, (Professor and Associate Dean for Planning, Bloustein School of Public Policy) and Robin Leichenko (Professor and Department Chair, Geography Department). After the panel and question and answer period, attendees will breakout into groups to brainstorm potential INFEWs research questions for future funding opportunities
